A downloadable prototype for Windows

An old WiiWare game (LIT) reimagined for PC. All assets used are made from scratch by me.

This is my main project I've been working on slowly for a while. I loved the original WiiWare game, but it was never ported to PC. I wanted to challenge myself to work out how to translate Wii controls to keyboard and mouse, alongside creating my own levels and mechanics.

The current build contains 2 greyboxed levels I have designed myself. There is no tutorial or context to anything in the game, so this page serves as that.

Description:

You play as a child who has to go through a corrupted version of your school where the shadows have turned deadly. Use your trusty slingshot to break the blacked-out windows with ammo you can find throughout the levels to create pathways of light. Your pocket flashlight can help you see details more clearly within the stygian room. Computer monitors can be turned on and off one at a time if you can find the remote to create even more light sources. Reach the exit door on each level to continue the nightmare.

Controls:

WASD to move the player (currently a grey box)

E to change from top down to first-person camera

F to interact/pick up items

Left Mouse Button to use current inventory item

Mouse wheel & 1, 2, 3 number keys to cycle through inventory items

Notes and contexts:

The exit door is currently just a brown rectangle against the wall. Press F while next to it to end the level.

Slingshot ammo are brown rectangular boxes on tables, and the remote is a white rectangular box with details on top. Get close enough to them to pick them up using F.

There is no counter for how much slingshot ammo you have left, it is planned, but for now, you'll just have to trust your memory.

Be sure that you're in first-person view to use the slingshot.

To move the camera in first-person view, move the mouse to either side of the screen.

There is no audio in the current game version; however, that is planned.

To exit outside of the level end screen, using ALT+F4 is best.

Known Bugs:

Windows can sometimes fail to break if you shoot it at too sharp of an angle from the side.

Deactivating a computer light when it's underneath the player's cube can fail to kill the player until they step off that light's area either into light or into the dark.

Designing the Levels:

Despite this prototype reimagining an already existing game, I wanted to make it my own. This included creating and designing the levels from scratch.

My goal for the first 2 levels was to learn to make a hidden tutorial and what goes into that. The first level goes over the base mechanic of the lights and windows, and the second introduces the computers and remote.

I don't have much art skill but making a layout using Krita helped me play with the position and form and try different designs before settling on what felt best.

Using the images as references in the engine made it much easier to understand my thought process. Although slight changes had to be made overall, creating mockups like this helped make the process smoother.
